The grade designated CCP PVA BF-26 is a fully hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) resin manufactured by Chang Chun Petrochemical Co., Ltd., characterized by a degree of hydrolysis exceeding 98.5 mol% and a 4 % aqueous solution viscosity at 20 °C ranging from 24.0 to 30.0 mPa·s (brookfield method, ISO 15023-1:2017). The resin is supplied as a free-flowing white granular powder with an ash content (as Na₂O) typically below 0.5 wt% and a volatile matter content not exceeding 5.0 wt% as measured by loss on drying at 105 °C for 3 hours. Its primary differentiator within the broader PVOH portfolio is the combination of high molecular weight and near-total acetate substitution removal, yielding films with elevated tensile strength and minimal water sensitivity relative to partially hydrolyzed analogues. This product is deployed across three principal manufacturing domains: aqueous film casting for water-soluble packaging, suspension polymerization stabilization for polyvinyl chloride production, and as a secondary thickener in construction-grade dry-mix mortars requiring controlled open time.

What differentiates BF-26 from partially hydrolyzed grades in cast film tensile performance?

The elevated degree of hydrolysis of BF-26 directly influences crystalline domain formation in solvent-cast films. During drying on a polished chromium-plated belt at surface temperatures between 80 °C and 110 °C, intermolecular hydrogen bonding proceeds to a greater extent than in grades with residual acetate content above 10 mol%. The resulting crystallinity index, measurable via differential scanning calorimetry endotherm area in the 210–230 °C range, correlates with tensile strength values exceeding 55 MPa (ASTM D882-18, 23 °C, 50 % RH conditioning) for films cast from a 10 wt% aqueous solution and dried to 8–10 wt% residual moisture. For comparison, a partially hydrolyzed grade such as BF-17 (hydrolysis 87–89 mol%) typically yields film tensile strengths in the range of 38–45 MPa under identical processing conditions. Elongation at break for BF-26 films remains above 150 %, providing sufficient ductility for thermoforming operations without excessive embrittlement. The trade-off manifests in dissolution rate: BF-26 films require water temperatures above 40 °C for complete dissolution within 120 s, whereas partially hydrolyzed grades disintegrate at 20 °C within 60 s. This thermal trigger is exploited in delayed-release detergent pods and agrochemical sachets where premature solubilization would constitute a failure mode. Production-scale cast film lines with air-flotation drying ovens report stable running at line speeds of 25–40 m/min when the casting solution temperature is maintained at 70 ± 3 °C and the die gap is set to 400–600 µm; deviations beyond ±2 °C in solution temperature lead to viscosity fluctuations exceeding 15 %, causing visible thickness banding across the web.

    High-Shear Suspension Polymerization Stabilizer Requirements

In the suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride monomer, the primary function of PVOH is to control the interfacial tension between the organic droplet phase and the aqueous continuous phase, thereby dictating the final PVC particle size distribution and porosity. BF-26, with its high molecular weight and fully hydrolyzed character, generates a protective colloid layer of high mechanical strength under the shear rates typical of industrial autoclaves (agitator tip speeds 3.5–6.0 m/s). This results in a PVC particle size distribution (K-value 57–60) centered on 130–150 µm with a span ((d90-d10)/d50) below 1.2. Secondary dispersants of lower hydrolysis degree (e.g., 55–65 mol%) are co-dosed at 200–400 ppm relative to VCM mass to fine-tune the grain porosity to 0.25–0.35 cm³/g as measured by mercury intrusion porosimetry. Field data from 20 m³ Pfaudler-type reactors indicate that replacing a medium-viscosity partially hydrolyzed grade entirely with BF-26 as the primary stabilizer, while maintaining a constant total PVOH charge of 700 ppm, shifts the d50 upward by approximately 15–20 µm and narrows the distribution. This shift necessitates a compensating adjustment of the agitator speed by +5 to +8 % to restore the target particle size; failure to do so results in increased grain vitrification during post-polymerization stripping, reducing plasticizer uptake rates by 12–18 %. BF-26 is dissolved in demineralized water at 90–95 °C for a minimum of 60 minutes under nitrogen blanketing prior to charging; solution concentrations of 4–6 wt% are standard. Incompatibility exists with borate-crosslinked secondary thickeners; the presence of borax even at 50 ppm in the aqueous phase causes immediate gelation of BF-26 solutions, creating fish-eyes that act as initiation sites for reactor fouling on the condenser surfaces.

When formulating two-component water-borne adhesives based on PVOH-stabilized vinyl acetate-ethylene (VAE) copolymer dispersions, the addition of BF-26 at 2–5 wt% on wet dispersion weight extends open time from below 60 seconds to approximately 180–240 seconds on uncoated 250 g/m² kraft stock at 23 °C and 55 % RH, per a modified ASTM D6195-03 loop-tack procedure. The high molecular weight fraction increases the low-shear Brookfield viscosity of the compounded adhesive from 4,000 mPa·s to 12,000–18,000 mPa·s (spindle #5, 20 rpm), enabling single-pass roller coating on high-speed packaging lines without misting. Storage stability of the blended system is limited by syneresis: phase separation is observed after 14 days at 40 °C if the PVOH solution component (prepared as a 15 wt% stock) is not protected with 0.1 wt% of a non-volatile defoamer such as a polyether-modified siloxane. Published data for shelf-life beyond 6 months in a two-part system where BF-26 and the VAE dispersion are stored separately is limited; industrial practice favors just-in-time blending within 8 hours of application.

When residual defoamer dosage falls short of 0.08 wt% in dry-mix mortar extrusion

Dry-mix cementitious tile adhesives (C2TE classification per EN 12004-3:2017) incorporating 0.3–0.6 wt% BF-26 as a secondary rheology modifier exhibit a modified flow curve under parallel-plate oscillatory testing. At a frequency of 1 Hz and strain amplitude of 0.1 %, the storage modulus (G') increases from approximately 15 kPa for an unmodified formulation to 28–35 kPa after 5 minutes of hydration, while the loss factor (tan δ) decreases from 0.45 to 0.30, indicating a more pronounced solid-like character critical for non-sag performance on vertical substrates. The water retention value, tested according to EN 459-2:2021 at a vacuum of 50 mbar for 15 minutes, improves from 85 % to 93 %. However, the interaction between BF-26 and polycarboxylate ether superplasticizers dosed at 0.10–0.15 wt% relies on the presence of a silicone-free defoamer at a minimum concentration of 0.08 wt% on total dry solids. Below this threshold, air entrainment exceeding 8 vol% is consistently observed in field mixes prepared with a forced-action paddle mixer running at 300 rpm for 90 seconds. These voids collapse during troweling, producing surface pinholes exceeding 2 mm diameter that compromise the adhesive contact area by up to 30 %, as quantified by pull-off testing on concrete slabs (EN 1323:2007, 28-day cure). The failure mode transitions from cohesive substrate fracture to adhesive interface delamination at defoamer dosages below 0.06 wt%.

The dissolution protocol for BF-26 in continuous high-shear batch mixers warrants tight thermal control. A slurry of 15–20 wt% PVOH in cold water (15–20 °C) is metered into a jacketed vessel containing water preheated to 85 °C under agitation from a pitched-blade turbine operating at 150–200 rpm. The temperature must not drop below 70 °C during the 20–25 minute addition phase; a drop below 65 °C leads to partially swollen gel particles that resist complete dissolution even after a further 90 minutes at 95 °C. These microgels, with sizes between 50–200 µm, act as stress concentrators in cast films, reducing tear propagation resistance (Elmendorf, ASTM D1922-15) by 35–40 % compared to solutions filtered through a 40 µm mesh. Therefore, in-line filtration with a duplex basket strainer containing 100 µm elements is standard practice in film converting operations.

The principal operational incompatibility of BF-26 arises in the presence of polyvalent metal salts and borate ions. At solution concentrations exceeding 0.02 M of borax, trivalent chromium, or ferric chloride, instantaneous crosslinking produces an intractable gel that cannot be refluidized by thermal or mechanical means. This limitation precludes the use of BF-26 as a binder in refractory castables where calcium aluminate cement and borate flux combinations are employed. Additionally, sustained exposure to temperatures above 180 °C in air induces chain scission and discoloration via keto-enol formation, with a measurable shift in the CIELAB b* value from 2.5 to 12–14 within 60 minutes, rendering the grade unsuitable for applications requiring heat-sealing at temperatures above 200 °C without an antioxidant stabilizer package.
